On the evening of September 27, 2025, a tragic mass shooting took place at the American Fish Company waterfront bar in Southport, North Carolina. According to officials, a gunman aboard a small boat opened fire on patrons at the bar, leaving three people dead and at least eight others injured.
The shooting began around 9:30 p.m. local time when a lone shooter in a boat approached the restaurant and opened fire. After the attack, the boat fled along the Intracoastal Waterway toward Oak Island. Within about 30 minutes, the U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities detained a person matching the description at a boat ramp in Oak Island.
Police have identified the suspect as 40-year-old Nigel Max Edge of Oak Island. He faces three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Law enforcement has described the incident as highly premeditated and targeted. Edge is being held without bail and is expected to make his first court appearance soon.
Out of those injured, six remain hospitalized while others declined treatment on the scene. Authorities have not yet released the names or conditions of the victims. Agencies involved in the investigation include the Southport Police Department, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Coast Guard. Officials have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Further updates are expected at an upcoming press conference where investigators may release victim names, the suspect’s motive and evidence findings. The court will proceed with the arraignment and legal steps against Edge as authorities continue to review surveillance footage, witness statements and forensic evidence to determine what led to this deadly attack.
